Alyssa Weathersby | STAGE DIRECTOR

Alyssa Weathersby is a quickly rising director and choreographer from Houston, Texas, who is happy to rejoin Opera in the Heights after directing the sell-out production of Rigoletto in the ‘22-’23 season. Her stylistic staging is often hailed as “cleverly designed” and “compelling.” During the 2024 festival season, Alyssa returned to the Utah Festival of Opera & Musical Theatre, where she choreographed Anything Goes, and served as Co-Director and Choreographer for Guys & Dolls and Little Shop of Horrors. Last season, Alyssa directed the world premier of Hildegard, Reborn, written by Rocky Duval and presented by the NYPL at the Lincoln Center’s Bruno Walter Auditorium, directed Opera del West’s La Divina, and directed and choreographed Early Music Access Project’s regional premier of James Shirley and John Locke’s Cupid & Death, at the famed Blackfriars Playhouse in Staunton, VA, where she previously directed their production of Venus & Adonis in 2022. Other recent highlights include directing the sell-out production L’elisir d’amore (Boston Opera Collaborative), devising and directing an updated Così fan tutt[i] at Carnegie Mellon University, and joining the New England Conservatory to direct Hansel & Gretel and the Undergraduate Opera Scenes and selections of the graduate Perkins Opera Scenes programs. Alyssa has also served as staff at the international festival Prague Summer Nights (director, choreographer, fight choreographer). When not involved with shows, Alyssa spends her time sparring at Thai Boxing gyms, exploring new places, trying new foods, and reading.
